The wide range of landscapes is characteristic of the Arnhem Nijmegen region. Both towns have parks that are more than 100 years old. It is not surprising Arnhem was voted Greenest Town in Europe. Only a short distance from the town lies Veluwezoom with Veluwezoom National Park where you can walk and cycle to your heart’s content. The Ooijpolder, Mookerheide and the Betuwe are other areas providing a relaxed and natural ambience. Meer informatie
Parks in the region
Veluwezoom National Park boasts 48 km2 of unspoilt countryside where you can explore the vast woods and heaths. Wild boar and deer roam here, as do imposing Scottish Highland cattle and Icelandic horses. Between Duiven and Westervoort lies Horsterpark greenbelt, a parklike green zone with a large lake and an island. Near the entrance you will find a Toeristisch Overstap Punt (TOP) - a transferium – from where you can follow magnificent cycle and skeeler routes across De Liemers.
National Landscape
De Gelderse Poort is one of twenty National Landscapes in the Netherlands, each with a unique combination of cultural historical and natural elements that tell the story of the Dutch landscape. The National Landscapes are characterised by the particular relationship between the various parts of the landscape, such as nature (flora and fauna), relief (valleys with brooks, mounds), land use (such as agriculture, water management) and developments (village views and fortresses, for example). National Landscapes are not museums, but areas where people live, work, run their businesses and pursue leisure activities.
Fruit and water
Its magnificent landscapes, crossed by rivers and countless colourful orchards, make the Betuwe an area well worth a visit. The Land van Maas en Waal is contained by the rivers Maas and Waal. Burst dikes and floods have clearly left their marks on this landscape, creating a permanent view of this stunning water landscape. New discoveries can be made in so-called “new nature”, where unspoilt countryside invites walks and rambles. The two large recreation areas De Berendonck and De Groene Heuvels provide cooling for all ages.
